Gastro-intestinal Involvement in Scleroderma (part 2 of 2)

http://www.bromotravelindo.com

How Is This Diagnosed?

Diagnosis is mainly based on symptoms however; it is officially made after a series of medical tests. There are several medical tests that people with suspicions about it can undergo, the simplest in an x-ray of which the doctor can see how your digestive system is doing. For sever cases, a surgical biopsy is done. This would involve having the doctor take scrapings of the linings of the affected organ and having it examined under a microscope.

Another way of diagnosing gastro-intestinal involvement in scleroderma is through endoscopy or by having the doctor view your digestive system through a small camera. This will allow the doctor to see which areas are affected by the scleroderma and see how it has developed within. It is very important for the doctor to know accurate details about a patient’s condition, especially for gastro-intestinal involvement in scleroderma since it will be their basis on what treatment approach to follow.

Can This Be Treated?

A very important point that all people involved in scleroderma or all those who are concerned with it is that it is treatable. The thought of scleroderma having no known cause or no treatments in general would usually discourage a lot of people. Gastro-intestinal involvement in scleroderma is very much possible as long as it is diagnosed and treated as early as possible. If significant damage has already been inflicted, little can be done to reverse those effects.

The key to treatment of gastro-intestinal involvement in scleroderma is to have it diagnosed as early as possible, taking care of yourself and careful medical attention. Make sure that you and your doctor would help each other out in treating you of your condition.

Gastro-intestinal Involvement in Scleroderma (part 1 of 2)

http://www.bromotravelindo.com

While the skin is the most affected organ in all cases of scleroderma, another one of the most affected organs are those that are found in the digestive system that would occur on around 75% to 85% of all cases. Patients with gastro-intestinal involvement in scleroderma would experience difficulty in their day to day lives as an effect brought about by scleroderma.

Scleroderma causes the walls of the affected organ in the digestive system to thicken, thus limiting the blood flow towards it. This in turn would limit the functions of the affected organ and would give rise to several problems which refer to the organ that is affected. Esophageal problems can occur in all forms of scleroderma, involvement with other organs in the digestive system such as the intestines, the liver and the stomach are only limited to systemic sclerosis.

Causes

There is no recognized cause of scleroderma, what is known is how it works. Scleroderma happens when a person’s antibodies would attack his or her own tissues, which is contradicting to its main purpose which is to protect them from harmful factors. This would in turn cause the affected area to thicken that would limit blood flow to it causing the normal function of the affected area to be dysfunctional, limited or completely dead.

Scleroderma would usually begin with the skin in the form of calcinosis or Raynaud’s phenomenon, symptoms which can be easily seen and felt in the skin. If the symptoms stop developing from that point, then that case is limited scleroderma however if it spreads to other organs, that case is systemic sclerosis and that could even get worse as it could still spread to other organs.

Causes of Mood Swings (part 2 of 2)

http://www.bromotravelindo.com

Puberty
Growing up is a painful but necessary change in life. This is especially true as kids hit their teenage years. For women, the changes are more visible: their bodies develop curves that once weren’t there. They also start experiencing menstruation, which is painful in itself. Their voices change and even their skins could change, making them more acne prone among other things. Add all these up and it’s fairly easy to understand why adolescents become prone to mood swings.

Bipolar Depression
In this case, mood swings are merely a symptom of a more prevalent condition. Bipolar depression is vastly underestimated by many. It is a serious condition that when left untreated can lead to graver complications.

The best way to know if one is suffering from bipolar depression is to obtain a professional diagnosis.

ADHD
ADHD or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is certainly not something to scoff at either. True enough, it is not in any way life-threatening but if the affected individual is left to cope with his condition without professional help and support, he will find it extremely difficult to achieve certain things in life – things that may come naturally to other people who aren’t suffering from ADHD.

And because he doesn’t understand the cause of his inadequacies, he could be prone to mood swings. There is no cure for ADHD but there are ways to help affected individuals lead a normal lifestyle.

Stress
Last but not the least, problems in your life can easily lead you to suffer from mood swings. The best way to prevent mood swings in this case is to solve your problems instead of running away from it.

Whatever the cause of your mood swing, you’ll find it easier to prevent them from occurring again if you have the care and support of your loved ones.

Causes of Mood Swings (part 1 of 2)

http://www.bromotravelindo.com

Mood swings, also known as phase mood changes, may have natural or unnatural causes. Receiving good and bad news at the same moment certainly warrants a mood swing. But there are also times when a person experiences mood swings for no apparent reason. When this happens, you might want to consult a physician about it as such mood swings could be a symptom of a more serious problem.

Possible Mood Swing Causes
Before approaching your physician, you can review the possible causes below and see if any of them may have brought about your mood swings.

Menstruation and Menopause
Some women have all the luck. They go through menstruation each month and menopause in the latter stages of their lives without ever suffering pain or discomfort. Others are not as fortunate and these women are the ones prone to suffer from mood swings.

Menstruation and menopause cause hormonal changes in our bodies and these changes could mess up the way we think and feel at the moment. Mood swings could be a result. Certainly, the pain that comes with menstruation and menopause can also cause mood swings. At the early part of the day, you could be extremely happy but once your period comes, your mood could instantly change and you become irritable and overly sensitive.

Mood swings during these stages may frequently occur but even so, they’re entirely natural and as such you shouldn’t be too worried about it. To regulate their frequency, try doing what you can to alleviate the pain caused by other symptoms of menstruation and menopause. Do that and the frequency of your mood swings will consequently go down.

Ideal Rates and Fees for Merchant Account (part 2 of 2)

http://www.bromotravelindo.com

Qualified rate

When a customer pays thru a regular customer credit card, it will be processed as “standard” by the merchant account provider. The applicable rate to be charged is called a qualified rate, the lowest rate a merchant will gain in accepting a credit card. This applies to both internet transactions and physical retail swiped through in an ordinary manner and used a regular customer credit card.

Mid-qualified rate

But what if a credit card is keyed into the terminal instead of being swiped? Or the customer used a rewards card or business card? What is the rate to be charged to you when you transact these payments?

When these happen, mid-qualified rate is the applicable rate for the transactions. This rate is also known as partially qualified rate. Merchant account providers gain a lot of profit from the transactions made under this rate. It is usually 1.50% - 2.50% higher than a qualified rate and only cost 0.30% - 0.50% more in interchange cost. Since reward cards are so common nowadays, it is probable that there is 15 – 40% transactions made everyday falls under the mid-qualified rate.

Non-qualified rate

The most wounding charged rate by the merchant account provider is the non-qualified rate. Transactions that did not fall as qualified and mid-qualified will be considered a non-qualified rate. It is the highest percentage rate with 2.00% - 2.50% qualified rate and costs only 0.50% - 1.50% higher in interchange costs. This rate is applied for special kind of credit card such as business card when all required fields are not entered. Or when the customer’s card is keyed into a credit card terminal than swiped and address verification is not performed.

In case of unsettled daily batch within the allotted time frame, transaction made thereafter are also charged with a non-qualified rate.

Ideal Rates and Fees for Merchant Account (part 1 of 2)

http://www.bromotravelindo.com

If you are a business owner who wants to accept credit card, debit cards, gift cards and other forms of card payment for goods and services, you must apply for a merchant account or widely known as payment processing or credit card processing. This type of service is not provided free and offered only to business owners with outstanding credit history. To succeed in this mode of payment, you need to understand certain specifications regarding its applicable rates and fees. For starters, it may sound complicated but as you go through same transactions each day, things will get familiar to you. Here are few merchant account jargons you’ll encounter.

Monthly and Interchange fees

The merchant account provider has the discretion in applying the monthly fees. Visa and MasterCard set a schedule of rates called Interchange fees wherein greater part of the per-item and percentage fees passes through the provider to the issuing bank. All transactions occurred are categorized into an interchange category according to the kind of card used for each transaction and its circumstances. An example to this are the transactions made in the credit card terminal through swiping and the transactions made manually, these two are categorized differently.

A transaction made through a reward card is also different with the transaction made using a standard card. When this various customization sum up, there are 130 categories with different rate. Then, from the 130 categories, merchant account providers group these into 3 to 6 categories, each with a single rate. The rates are based on the average interchange rate expected for each category with an additional markup.

Living Wills And The Terry Schiavo Case (part 2 of 2)

http://www.bromotravelindo.com
In essence, it is a form of advanced directive that is written down on paper for the health care team to follow once the creator becomes too sick or incapacitated to communicate his or her decisions about treatment. In this way, the attending physicians and the immediate family would know whether the patient would like to receive "heroic measures" or to discontinue all types of life-support measures completely.

A living will may be viewed as a legal expression of your desires with regard to medical treatment. You may also appoint someone to be in-charge of deciding on your behalf in case the need arises. That person is usually called a "health care surrogate" or a "patient advocate".

When talking about living wills, the question of timing usually comes up. People normally want to know when it would be best to make a living will. The answer is pretty simple. Since state laws govern the making of living wills, the policies in one state may differ in another. Nevertheless, the standard rules involve the following qualifications: legal age and sound mind.

In most states in the U.S., the legal age is 18 years old and above. Then again, some states have set the benchmark a year older – at 19 years old, so be sure to determine these technicalities before deciding to write your own living will. Aside from the age, certain measures must be done as well.

In order for the living wills to be valid, the appropriate form must be filled out and the procedure must conform to the laws of the particular state you live in.

Some states necessitate the attendance of two qualified witnesses during the signing of the living will. The law may also require the presence of a Notary Public, together with the two onlookers.

Living Wills And The Terry Schiavo Case (part 1 of 2)

http://www.bromotravelindo.com

The story about Terry Schiavo and the court battles that her family and husband had to endure spread all over the country. Its exposure on the news had opened people's minds about living wills and how these documents could save them from a great deal of suffering and difficulties. On top of that, it changed the perceptions of Americans about death in general.

If the patient – Terry Schiavo – had drawn up a living will prior to her ill-fated collapse that led to severe brain damage, the expensive and highly publicized court hearings would have been avoided.

The painful question of whether to continue the provision of life-sustaining measures, in the form of tube feeding, should have been immediately answered by none other than Terry herself.

When a judge reached a decision to remove the feeding tube, the patient's husband – Michael Schiavo – made it a point to publicly endorse the importance of making a living will. This written, legally binding document would have saved him and his wife's family from all the trouble and painful struggles of deciding for the patient – based on their individual points of view about the situation.

After the case had closed, numerous Americans began to accept the harsh and inevitable reality of illness to the point of powerlessness – and consequently death. For this reason, more and more eligible folks had decided to draw up their own living wills and put their health care preferences down on paper. Basically, people had become more informed with regard to the issue and what they can do to avoid falling into the same difficult spot.

What is a living all about?

If you're still not well-versed about how living wills work, then you better expand your knowledge about these legal documents as early as possible.

Effect of Word-of-Mouth Marketing on Your Branding Strategy (part 2 of 2)

http://www.bromotravelindo.com
Bigger Customer Voice

It has been highly emphasized by marketing experts that if you want to maintain or increase your market share, you need to work on providing excellent customer service. This will ensure that you get a share of loyal customers who believe and trust in your brand. If you're able to successfully enhance that trust, then you are able to produce a good customer voice. Therefore, when these individuals are asked to say something about your company, they only have positive views to say.

Hence, several companies are now devising methods to improve their “listening” ability when it comes to customer voice. Indeed, improving customer communications will produce satisfied customers and consequently increase the potential of producing more positive word of mouth marketing.

Tips for Increasing Word of Mouth Marketing

A recent study conducted to determine the most influential marketing methods, word of mouth marketing came out on top. Hence, it has raised awareness on the important role that consumers play in influencing other's buying options. Therefore, you can utilize a positive word of mouth marketing to create your own sound branding strategy. Here's how you can do it:

• Create a branding strategy that will get people interested and have them talk about it. Unless you can arouse their curiosity and attention, you will not succeed in this.

• See to it that you satisfy customer needs. When people are happy about your product, they will joyfully and willingly recommend it to others.

• Respond to feedbacks, whether positive or negative. Aside from promoting your business, you can utilize word of mouth marketing as a means to gather essential information on how you can improve your service and branding strategy.

Effect of Word-of-Mouth Marketing on Your Branding Strategy (part 1 of 2)

http://www.bromotravelindo.com

Word of Mouth Marketing

There's probably no more effective branding strategy in existence than word of mouth marketing. However, only few realize its actual potential in helping you build a successful business and branding system. What could be better than having actual people talk others into doing business with your company? It is a common thing for people to do, which is talk about something a recent product that they were satisfied or had good experiences with.

And yet, word of mouth marketing does not cost you anything. It is just as effective as other methods of advertising or increasing awareness about your company's products or services but without the entailing costs and investments. Even marketing experts profess word of mouth marketing to be the most potent means of communicating a company's marketing message.

Effects of Word of Mouth Marketing

If you have seen various TV commercials or websites that sell products, then you might already be familiar with testimonials. This is a marketing ploy utilized by most business owners in order to provide a valid proof with regards to the benefits and claims made by the company, which is in the form of actual users of the product.

However, there is a discrepancy here: if business owners were to tap people to provide a testimony about a product and the results experienced, then it is most likely a biased demographic. The business owner will pick only users who have something positive to say about the product, since their main intent is to influence the buying choices of the consumers.

This is when the power of word of mouth marketing becomes evident. Using this method to communicate the potentials of a given brand creates a personal connection between the consumers and the product in question. Previous users to the product who attained satisfaction from it can recommend the product to their friends or family members. Therefore, business owners can get free advertisement out of that, which is probably as effective (or more) than a TV ad but without the costs.

Word of mouth marketing can work to a company's disadvantage as well. It happens when people who have tried the product have certain complaints about bad service, or bad quality products, and unsatisfactory customer relations. Research reveals that word of mouth marketing essentially has a bigger impact on the buying decisions of people aged between 18 to 34 and 35-54.

Guidelines for Choosing Fabrics When Dressmaking (part 2 of 2)

http://www.bromotravelindo.com
Wool is naturally warm, wrinkle resistant, and absorbent. That is because the fabric is made from hair fibers of animals like sheep (the most common source of wool fabric in the industry). Wool is best for making winter dresses and coats. You can also impart additional knowledge about wool, especially to the one wearing the outfit. Wool fabric should never be ironed, but it can be steam pressed. Most wools should only be dry cleaned.

Cotton is perhaps the most popular and commonly used fabric for dressmaking because it can be used when making just about any dress. Cotton is made from a plant also called cotton. It is characterized by its durability, making it long wearing and extra strong. The fabric can come with different textures, finishes, and weight. It can also be knitted or woven. Many people prefer to wear cotton clothes because it is comfortable to the skin and is ideal for all climates.

The abovementioned fabrics are made from natural materials. You can also choose from among several fabrics that are synthetically manufactured. Some of the synthetic fabrics are nylon, acrylic, and polyester. Nylon is highly elastic, tough, and moth resistant. Acrylics are light weight and are warm. On the other hand, polyester is light weight and is quickly drying, making it ideal for making athletic clothes. Polyester also exhibits wash and wear features.

Know the characteristics of fabrics you are considering using before finally making a dress. Natural and synthetic fabrics are equally recommendable, though synthetic types are more advisable for heavy duty purposes.

Know How To Speak Through Body Language (part 2 of 2)

http://www.bromotravelindo.com

You can still give a good impression even in the most tense situations, like in a job interview. You simply have to avoid gestures that are giving signals that you are nervous, uncomfortable, or anxious. Never slouch, fidget, drum your fingers, shuffle your feet, or tremble. These actions takes the word “confidence” away from you.

You can also speak through handshakes. A firm one with the palm pointing downwards and arm slightly extended indicates confidence or power. Meanwhile, a weak handshake pointing upward is an indication of tension or shyness.

You must also be aware of the message you are trying to convey whenever you cross your arms. This is one of the actions that you must avoid. This will tell another person that you might be hiding something, lying, or being impatient.

Make Your Eyes Talk

Your eyes can clearly express what you feel or desire. Eye contact is the most important eye body language since it could mean interest, confidence, eagerness to listen, and sincerity. The inability to hold long eye contact indicates dishonesty or discomfort.

Culture: A Very Important Consideration

In conversing with another person, it is a great advantage that you know their culture. Prolonged eye contact, act of raising voice volume, and touching may be rude to other countries, especially in Asia. Also, there are a number of gestures that mean differently in other cultures.

Learn how to speak using your body. Body language is indeed much more convincing than words and is very useful in giving impressions in certain situations. But the only trick in learning how to speak and understand body language is that what books or research say may not necessarily be the intentions or real message of one person.

Know How To Speak Through Body Language (part 1 of 2)

http://www.bromotravelindo.com

Body language is a form of nonverbal communication wherein one can send or receive messages through body movements, gestures, facial expression, and the like. There are general acts of body language that almost everyone does in his or her daily life. However, do you know how to speak this language? Can you understand other people by just reading their body language? The importance of knowing how to speak through body language is that you can have the ability to control any situation with anybody in any place and time.

Personal Space

Everyone of us has his own personal space. It is somewhat like a comfort zone. It is an invisible region that surrounds you, and if someone tries to invade it, you will feel uncomfortable or threatened. But one's personal space is dependent on certain situations. A person who grew up in the city with crowded streets has a smaller personal space compared to one who lives in the rural area. Learning how to respect one's personal space is one method to make communication through body language more effective between two or more people. There are body movements and gestures better appreciated and understood when there is an appropriate distance.

Body Gestures And Movements

Various body parts are used in the body language – the hands, arms, legs, head, and body posture. Hands can make several gestures, each with a difference in meaning; and you can express well through them. If you want to let another person know you are interested in him or in the conversation, the hands can emphasize it for you. Do not try to hide your hands from him, like putting them into your pockets. This gesture means that you are hiding something from him or you are already getting bored. Showing your palm upward or outward shows that you are comfortable and interested in your situation. Leaning your body or directing it towards that person is also a signal that you are indeed listening to him.

In Depth Discussion In Planning CNC Programs (part 2 of 2)

http://www.bromotravelindo.com

The fourth step on the step by step requirements would be the proper selection of the tools required to create the parts. This step is important on the industry manufacturing practices, basically the tools to be chosen is based on the common sense and Good CNC operators and programmers should be aware of them. Usually there is a certain checklist on this step, the most important point of this checklist would be knowing the material to be machined as well as its characteristics.

Fifth step would be the calculation of the cutting data. Proper calculation is one  of the important steps in the planning process. This is where the spindle speed, federate value, cutting speed and the depth of cut is calculated to fit to the specifications in the blueprint.

Sixth step would be the actual programming process, this is also the step where the proper Units are inserted into the programming algorithm of the Computer Numerical Control Machine. This is where we incorporate all the codes that are needed to run the whole CNC machines in the CAD software.

Programming Considerations

In order for other programmers to analyze and append your algorithm, it is important to have certain programming considerations. These program considerations were suggested by experienced Computer Numerical Control Machine Programmers and Operators.

First it is important that you develop a programming technique that will be readily understood by other developers, with a good programming technique programs could easily be appended if there are any errors.

Second, it is also important to proofread all programs for typographical errors before being executed in the CAM software, this is to ensure that the CNC machine would operate its desired operation. And most important of all is to keep your programs as simple as possible in order for the machine to process the instructions faster.

In Depth Discussion In Planning CNC Programs (part 1 of 2)

http://www.bromotravelindo.com

Understanding the Computer Numerical Control Machine as well as learning the method of programming these machines is not enough to maximize the capability of these devices. Even if you are proficient on those two stated above, proper understanding of the step by step procedures is still important.

In this article we would talk about the step by step procedures of programming Computer Numerical Control Machines which is recommended by the most experienced CNC Machine Operators and progammers.

Step by Step procedures in planning of a CNC program

Whenever we try to program a Computer Numerical Control Machine the first thing that the Machine operator should consider is the blueprint of the part we are trying to manufacture. Proper understanding and reading of a blueprint is a basic and the most important skill in the manufacturing Industry that engineers, managers, CNC machine operators as well as CNC programmers should know about.

Proper understanding of these blueprints should help the CNC machine operator as well as the programmer to use the appropriate CNC machine to be used.

The second step on the proper programming of a Computer Numerical Control Machine is by selecting the appropriate type of Machine that will be used. This is where the proper understanding of each machine type comes into play. Knowing the type of design, specifications as well as features of a machine will help you on choosing the appropriate one.

The third step would be the analysis of the operations or the setup sheet. The setup sheet is used to describe the necessary processes needed to create the parts on a CNC machine. The setup sheet includes the proper machine sequence and also the tools and cutting data to be used. Specifications written on the setup sheet aids the programmer on the proper algorithm needed by the Computer Numerical Control Machine.

How to Survive the Economic Recession (part 2 of 2)

http://www.bromotravelindo.com

2. Plan ahead.
You may not want to become an obsessive-compulsive but there are a lot of advantages to being one. Planning ahead and keeping the household organized can help save you some money in utilities, gas and even food. Planning your meals for instance will help you determine just how much you need to purchase at the grocery stores. The same goes with the gas that you use when you cook food or the electricity that you consume when you use the microwave over.

Planning meals allow you to cook food at the same time. This saves energy big time. Designating a day to go to the laundry shop, the bank, the groceries and to do other errands will allow you to save on gas by going on one road trip instead of going on multiple trips to town. You can even plan your trips in between sending your kids to school.

3. Partner with your neighbors
If kids in your neighborhood go to the same school, ask the mothers to form some sort of group that will take turns sending the kids to school and fetching them afterwards. This will not only allow you to do more during the day, it will also save in gas as the kids travel in a carpool. If this is not viable, considering getting your kids into a school bus.

This way, you can be sure that your kid is safe and of course, school buses are cheaper than driving your kids to school everyday, truly a good option for kids in this time of economic recession.

How to Survive the Economic Recession (part 1 of 2)

http://www.bromotravelindo.com

People in the prehistoric times are not the only ones in survival mode. Nowadays, people all over the world especially in the United States are feeling the heat of the prevailing economic recession. With the sudden downturn of the economy, a lot of people are more hard up than they were in previous years. Some have even lost their jobs or have lost their homes because of the real estate crash in recent months. The problem with rising costs of gas has also affected the prices of food and other products. Times right now are tighter and harder.

But this is not to say that times are impossible to survive on. In fact, with a little creativity and a lot of forbearance, you can actually ride the economic recession tide and come out the victor. In this survival game, the most likely to survive are those who are willing to change their lifestyle and adapt to the times. Here are some ways to survive the economic recession:

1. Save!
This is not the time to buy, buy and buy in the excess. Buy only those that you feel you can eat or use. Do not buy more than you need. That way, you can be sure that you will not be wasting food. If you don't need additional clothes or things at home, don’t buy any. Save your money for other things that you will be needing in case emergency times are called for.

Saving does not only mean saving money but also saving in electricity, gas and water. You may not realize it but these are things that get a large chunk from your monthly expenses. The same goes with clothes and snacks. This is the time to scrimp. People will not think less of you when you do that.

Remember that you are aiming to make your house very presentable and accommodating to your guests. If needed, it is also right to leave proper instructions for plant care.

Before the home exchange, talk to the exchange partner and discuss about other issues and items to be swapped. You may consider exchanging car keys. Phone bill adjustments and payments could also be arranged so that you could rest assured your guest family would not leave high utility bills when they go. Pet care arrangements also need to be discussed.

Lastly, as you intend the guest family to be clean and responsible guests, you should also do the same when you go and live for a while in your exchange partner’s home. Home exchange agreements work two-way. It is a give and take relationship.

Checklist When Preparing for a Home Exchange (part 1 of 2)

 http://www.bromotravelindo.com

Have you entered into a home exchange agreement as you and your family intend to take a vacation elsewhere? Of course, it is just righteous and ethical that you make your house very presentable and decent for the family who would come over. You could also expect the home you would be living in during the swap to be homey and comfortable. That is why you should strive to make sure you prepare well for your home exchange.

How do you prepare appropriately and effectively? You might be surprised there might be so many preparations you should take. Worry no more. The following checklist would help you make good in preparing for a coming home exchange.

Leave operating manual or instructions so that the exchange family would rightly operate the television set, CD player, VCR, home alarm, heater and air conditioner, microwave, and vacuum cleaner. Be particular with this especially when your appliances function complicatedly.

Leave more space in drawers and closets so that the guest family could use them. It is also practical that you leave many hangers. Make sure there are enough linen for beds, kitchen towels, sufficient toilet paper, vacuum bags, and cleaners. If you got valuables, lock them in a secured compartment or a separate room.

It would be appropriate to arrange to put your mail on hold at the post office until you send notice. You do not want your guest family to receive bill statements and letters for you. For vacations longer than a week, it is also advisable to prepay all your pending bills. You should not expect your guest family to pay your dues. As for newspaper subscription deliveries, put them on hold also unless the exchange family want those papers delivered.

Bird Watching: A Past Revealed (part 2 of 2)

It was only in the late 1800s that the call for bird protection began leading to the rising popularity of observations on living birds. The Audubon Society was started to protect the birds from the growing trade.  The term bird watching first read in the title of the book “Bird Watching” by Edmund Selous in 1901.  The earliest field guide in the United States was Birds Through and Opera Glass By Florence Bailey.

Early and until mid-20th century in the eastern seaboard region, they were influenced by the works of Ludlow Griscom and later Roger Tory Peterson.

The rising popularity and use of cars increased the mobility of birdwatchers.  The rising popularity of the car increased the mobility of birdwatchers and this made new locations accessible to those interested in birds.  Networks of birdwatchers in the UK began to form in the late 1930s under the British Trust for Ornithology. The BTO saw the potential to produce scientific results through the networks, unlike the Royal Society for the Preservation of Birds (RSPB) which like the Audubon Society originated from the bird protection movement.

The falling cost of air-travel made flying to remote birding destinations a possibility for a large number of people towards the 1980s. The need for global guides to birds became more relevant and one of the biggest projects that began was the "Handbook of the Birds of the World" which started in the 1990s with Josep del Hoyo a country doctor in Catalonia, Jordi Sargatal and ornithologist Andy Elliott.

Right now, there are about 80 million Americans into bird watching.  More and more people are still showing interest in taking part of this recreational activity.  Its rich history and culture, paves how big this outdoor sport has contributed to the culture and natural history.  Through all the years, one thing still remain.

The love for nature and the how history proved that people can make a stand for the environment.

Bird Watching: A Past Revealed (part 1 of 2)

Bird watching is also called birding.  The first term birding was used for the practice of fowling or hunting with firearms.  More and more people are travelling long distances to spot rare species of birds, these people are called twitchers.  The goal of twitching is often to accumulate species on one’s lists.

Some bird watchers look at bird watching as a healthy competition.  They aim to get or accumulate the longest species list.  The act of pursuing a rare specie is called “twitch” or a “chase”.

Showing interest in observing birds can be traced back as early as 1700s in the works of Gilbert White, Thomas Bewick, George Montagu and John Clare.  During the Victorian Era, it was fashionable in Britain to collect eggs and later skins for artefacts of interest.  To obtain rare specimens, wealthy collectors have contacts in colonies that will move and collect for them.

But the collection and collectors went to far.  In 1800, bird hats were all the rage.  Harriet Hemenway tok the lead in fighting the millinery trade or feather industry.  She went on to shut down the interstate bird skin trade, she founded the Massachusetts Audubon Society.

Rosalie Edge, another hero, bought Hawk Mountain in Pennsylvania then turned it into the first sanctuary for birds of prey, which were otherwise being slaughtered. Florence Merriam wrote a guide for newbies.  This served as the early field guide fir bird watching which was incomprehensible for the average hobbyist like them.
